Welcome to Wellness and Therapy at Kula Heart Yoga Center
At Kula, we believe that wellness for the whole body, mind, and spirit is a way to live in harmony.
Our Therapists have gone through many years of training and are compassionate to your individual needs.
Massage has been used to enhance health for thousands of years. Today, people from all walks of life are turning to massage because of its many beneficial effects for body and mind. Massage can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint mobility, reduce mental and physical fatigue, promote faster healing of injured muscle tissue, and so much more.
Massage also helps relieve the stress of everyday living. Most of us live with stress but we do not always recognize how damaging it is to our health. According to the American Institute of Stress, 43% of adults suffer adverse health effects due to stress. As much as 75-90% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints. Massage counters the body's stress response by lowering levels of hormones such as cortisol. It is a means to restore the body's balance and bring about a restful mind.

Susan Amato, L.M.T. started exploring Yoga in high school. While she was pursuing a double major in psychology and English at Lehigh University, she started studying Taiji, Taoism, and other Eastern philosophies. It was during this time that Susan started working as a Chiropractic assistant at Banko Chiropractic. After graduating from Lehigh, Susan decided to attend massage therapy school at Health Options Institute. Before even finishing the program Susan was invited to apprentice and study with two of her teachers at The Gentle Spirit, an amazing opportunity for her to delve even deeper into the studies she had already embarked upon in terms of bodywork and massage, philosophy, physical training, and spiritual practice. Susan is a highly trained professional bodyworker specializing in: Deep Tissue Massage, Orthopedic Neuromuscular Therapy, and Thai Massage. She also has received extensive training in various self-cultivation practices such as: Qigong, Yoga, and Taiji. Susan is a graduate of Kula Heart Yoga Center's 200 hour teacher training program. Melding her Massage Therapy work and principles of Yoga training, Susan is highly effective at identifying and treating structural misalignment and postural discomfort, as well as supplying appropriate stretching and strengthening techniques to bring each individual back to optimal functioning, balance, and health.
Susan has treated and worked with a wide variety of injuries, symptoms, and individuals each, naturally with unique structural alignments. She has extensive experience with auto-accident injuries, workplace injuries, sport injuries, habitual postural discomfort and symptomology. She has treated all ages from children to seniors, and lifestyles ranging from office positions, physically intensive maintenance and mechanical work, those who stay at home minding house and children, and even professional athletes.
"Susan is among the best massage therapists, energy workers and healers I have ever encountered in my search for relief from chronic back pain. Her Thai massage and deep tissue workout goes beyond the superficial, and has allowed me to reduce my medication and improve my quality of life. Often when we begin a session, I am hunched over, tense, stressed out and in pain. Susan finds every painful pressure point and energy blockage, and works at it until it finally releases. The process doesn't always feel good, but when I leave, I am re-energized, able to walk upright and function normally again. I highly recommend Susan to anyone struggling to manage chronic pain, who needs more than a superficial "feel-good" massage to find deeper and more lasting relief."

Elaine Dellande L.M.T. has been a massage therapist since 2001 and has continued to study different therapeutic modalities over the years. She enjoys the diversity of her clients' needs and integrating various techniques in her sessions to meet those needs.
Her specialties include Swedish massage, deep tissue, neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, orthopedic massage, prenatal massage, sports massage, partner massage, reflexology, geriatric massage, lymphatic massage, Reiki, and Swe-Thai.
"As a student/busy mom of 4, and as a law student, we often found ourselves spending a lot of time working the tension/stress out of each other's neck and shoulders. We chose to sign up for the partner massage class in order to learn the proper techniques for the best results. Elaine provided a relaxed, non-intimidating environment for us, taking plenty of time to answer all of our questions in detail.
She shared various techniques, focused on our troubled areas, and allowed each of us an hour to practice on the other. We were completely at ease with Elaine and came away with valuable knowledge that has helped alleviate the tension we both were carrying in our necks and shoulders. We both feel like it has helped us connect on a deeper level, and it's definitely one of our favorite experiences we've shared as a couple. We highly recommend Elaine and her partner massage class!"

Michele Gubish, L.M.T.
In 1998, Michele decided she wanted to learn a healing art that would not only provide healing to those with injuries and chronic pain, but she also had an enthusiasm for working with athletes to improve their agility, performance, and recovery while working in an environment she loves.
Michele graduated from the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy in Michigan in 1999 with a 620 hour diploma focusing on sports massage, relaxation, lymph drainage, reflexology, Shiatsu, and hydrotherapy. She also completed 60 hours of Myofascial Release and 70 hours of Neuromuscular Therapy.
While in Michigan, Michele provided chair massage at bicycling events, relays, and in hospitals. On her return to Pennsylvania in 2001, Michele continued to practice massage on a part-time basis in order to explore another career. Her love for massage therapy never faded.
While attending continuing education classes at Health Options Institute in Bethlehem, Michele was introduced to the Hawaiian art of Lomi Lomi. This healing art opened doorways to a whole new understanding of massage. Michele’s newfound love of this ancient Hawaiian art has brought her a deeper appreciation for relaxation massage and she has since added hot stone massage to her list of offerings. She continues to delve deeper in the Hawaiian healing arts.
In 2011, Michele’s interest in combining energy work with massage led her to pursue and achieve her Level 2 Reiki training. She has found the use of Reiki during a massage allows for a deeper level of healing. Michele looks forward to receiving Level 3 Reiki certification sometime in the future.
Michele is Licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is a member of the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP).

Mary Wolf has been influenced by the study of massage therapy and the wellness of the body for most of her life; beginning at the age of 7, she learned many different massage techniques from her Grandfather. She studied more therapeutic techniques at Health Options Institute of Technology in Bethlehem and became certified in Deep Muscle massage, Swedish massage and Aromatherapy in 2008. She truly loves working as a massage therapist and healer by helping the mind, body and spirit relax.
Currently Mary is working on expanding her skills as a healer by studying the techniques of Qigong and Qi healing allowing her to incorporate more energy work into her massages. She finds that healing the body from the inside out is a miraculous experience for all. Mary also plans to further her knowledge and study different massage techniques within the year.
Among all this, Mary has been studying the practice of yoga and will be attending a teaching program in September of 2011 so that she can share her passions with others. She believes that a holistic approach to healing is essential to benefit all aspects of the “self” and has become very dedicated to this ideal. Mary has always and will always radiate a positive energy to anyone who is willing to accept it!
“With Mary’s combination of knowledge and instincts it gives her a gift that very few possess; from beginning to end Mary works to rejuvenate your body and mind. Throughout the massage you will feel your body transform back into its natural state. Amazing, uplifting and sensual are just a few of the words I can use to describe this experience…it’s quite literally what the doctor ordered.” -Todd Allen |
Yoga Therapy Testimonial
My son is 7 years old and has cerebral palsy. He has been doing yoga at Kula Heart Yoga for approximately a year now. The thing I like most about yoga is that it focuses on very important skills that are so basic they can sometimes become overlooked. One of the main focuses is being aware of your body. After working for a couple of months, my son was able to blow out his birthday candles and wiggle his toes! These are simple accomplishments that can be taken for granted. They are also so important and easily overlooked. Also, the instructor can move easily from one activity to the next according to my son's mood and attention span during his session.
I would highly recommend yoga for all children with special needs! It is so beneficial - we love yoga therapy!

Wellness Services:
Swedish Massage - this classic, relaxing technique focuses on improving circulation through manipulation of the muscles. Swedish massage relieves muscle tension and increases flexibility and mobility.
Deep Muscle targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury.
Aromatherapy: Believe it or not, our sense of smell is ten thousand times more sensitive than our sense of taste. Aromatherapy supports wellness and may improve
your quality of life in physical, emotional, and spiritual ways. It is both an art
and a science. When used with massage, essential oils can produce remarkable
and therapeutic results. The benefits of your experience can be delightfully
enhanced with the addition of aromatherapy.
Foot Massage Lessons: Foot massage is a simple and effective way to better health. Since the feet are rich with nerve endings, massaging them can be very powerful and pleasurable. Foot massage is one of the most unbelievably relaxing treats that you can give yourself or others. The feet are often the hardest worked part of the body. They are what hold your weight up all day long and can often become tired and achy. A good foot massage brings about pain relief as well as relaxation and stress relief.
Geriatric massage is massage for the mature and aging client. Relatively soft, soothing techniques are used to help improve joint mobility, reduce pain, increase circulation, and nourish the skin. (This can be included as Swedish)
Lomi Lomi is an ancient Hawaiian artful massage technique. It is a very smooth and fluently moving modality developed from Hawaiian dance, rooted in sacred tradition. It is a luxurious treatment as well as therapeutic and highly restorative.
Lymphatic massage uses gentle, rhythmic strokes and pumping movements that enhance the function of the lymphatic system thereby encouraging and supporting the body's natural defenses and ability to heal itself.
Myofascial release uses techniques that target the fascial system. Various conditions can cause the fascia to become tight, restricted, and a source of tension to the rest of the body. Gentle, sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions is used to eliminate pain and restore motion. (often utilized in Deep Muscle)
Neuromuscular therapy utilizes static pressure on specific myofascial trigger points to relieve pain. This approach to muscular pain relief will help to bring about balance between the nervous and the musculoskeletal systems. (often utilized in Deep Muscle)
Orthopedic massage combines some elements of sports and medical massage; it integrates various modalities to treat soft-tissue pain and injury. (often utilized in Deep Muscle)
Partner massage lessons A couple, or pair of friends, will learn how to give and to receive a relaxing, therapeutic massage. The minimum session length is ninety minutes. A two-hour session is recommended.
Prenatal massage is performed with consideration for the special needs of pregnant women. The therapist knows the proper way to position and support the woman's body during the massage and how to modify techniques.
Reflexology involves applying pressure to certain points on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body. The feet and hands, with their many nerve endings, provide an easy way to interrupt dysfunctional cycles and reset homeostasis, the body's equilibrium. The relaxing nature of reflexology is a major aspect of its benefits.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "Therapeutic Touch", designed to balance the energetic body. It is based on the idea that life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
Shiatsu is the restoration of properly balanced energy flow
in the body. The circulation of this energy can become blocked or stagnant
due to stress or disorder. Shiatsu promotes health and inner harmony
by strengthening the body's self-healing abilities. It is applied to the comfortably
clothed body with both broad contact and specific thumb pressure and also
includes some gentle, passive mobilization.
Sports massage is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery. There are three contexts in which sports massage can be useful to an athlete: pre-event, post-event, injury treatment, and maintenance.
Swe-Thai is an innovative blend of Swedish massage and traditional Thai massage. Thai massage consists of passive, yoga-style stretching and pressure on energy lines and points. When combined with the soft tissue therapy, the result is a highly effective and versatile form of bodywork that leaves one feeling both relaxed and energized. The minimum session length is sixty minutes, ninety minutes is recommended.
Thai Massage is unlike more conventional therapies in that it is done on the floor and involves a great deal of stretching and structural manipulation, allowing the body to unwind. It encompasses a wide variety of techniques used in Thai Bodywork , Shiatsu, Traditional Massage, and Yoga practice that are blended into a truly personalized session inspired by the unique present state of each individual person. This process allows one to: unwind and balance out the muscular structure of the body, free muscular impingement on nerves, make space in joints and improve joint mobility, and improve posture and postural related discomfort.
